Treatment of Spider Veins

Spider veins are veins that have become enlarged and visible to the eye. The size of these veins tends to increase as a person ages, although heredity can play a role in the onset of spider veins. Occupations involving standing for long periods of time, obesity, pregnancy and certain medicines containing estrogen may also contribute to the appearance of spider veins.

The Procedure:
Sclerotherapy and laser surgery are two of the most common treatments for spider veins. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of small amounts of saline or other chemical solutions. The solution causes the vein to close up or collapse. Sclerotherapy requires multiple treatments. Laser treatment of spider veins utilizes the heat from a high-intensity laser beam to selectively destroy abnormal veins. Your doctor may recommend a combination of traditional sclerotherapy and laser surgery to maximize your result.

Patient Considerations:
The treatment of spider veins is a minor procedure requiring little if any sedation or numbing prior to the procedure. The procedure is relatively pain free and most patients return to their regular routine within hours of the procedure. One of our friendly surgery schedulers can answer questions and schedule a complimentary consultation to discuss the best options available to you for the treatment of spider veins.
